Norberto Ferretti selects Yanmar to power his Private Yacht

Industry legend Norberto Ferretti has acclaimed the outstanding responsiveness, acceleration and reliability of a Yanmar triple-engine propulsion package after selecting the complete diesel solution for use onboard his own 45-foot motoryacht.

Featured in a new video launched today, the Ferretti Yachts co-founder and esteemed yacht builder elaborates on why he chose the Yanmar 8LV installation for his 47 Tender, a decision based on decades of yacht building during which he oversaw the installation of more than 700 YANMAR engines onboard the Riva Aquariva.

He enthuses about his experiences using and operating the Yanmar power solution on his prized boat, while enjoying daily excursions along the spectacular coast of Formentera, Spain, just south of Ibiza.

The lightweight and efficient YANMAR package, installed by Yanmar’s Italy distributor, Cartello S.r.l., consists of three 8LV370 engines with Yanmar ZT sterndrives, controlled by the Yanmar Vessel Control System (VCS) and JC10 joystick control.

Fulfilling Norberto Ferretti’s specific requirements to exceed 35 knots and have responsive joystick control for easy marina navigating and alongside mooring, the Yanmar triple-8LV installation is performing above the Italian entrepreneur’s high expectations, particularly impressing with the rate of acceleration, simplicity of use, and smooth shifting.

In the relaxed footage, which is also available in a full-length interview by The Boat Show’s Maurizio Bulleri, Mr Ferretti expands on the origins of the iconic Ferretti company’s establishment in 1968 and discusses his deep love of the sea and passion for boating. He explains the reasons beyond his loyalty for Yanmar technology and his long-held confidence in the engines’ reliability and performance, and also highlights his appreciation for the servicing capabilities of the global Yanmar network.

“I wanted a diesel engine with the same performance of a gasoline engine and this Yanmar 8LV has a twin-turbo system that is impressive,” explained Norberto Ferretti. “The Yanmar 8LV is very light and it has this incredible boost. The boat is very responsive, so it stops easily and then goes back up to 40 knots in just a few meters time. I was very impressed with this Yanmar’s ZT370 sterndrive. I have alongside mooring here in Formentera. I just give little tap, lightly and briefly turn the JC10 joystick, and the stern or the bow goes towards the quay. It is extremely easy.”

Mr Ferretti also singled out Yanmar distributor Cartello for praise, due to their efficiency and ‘exemplary’ assistance regarding the accurate installation drawings and wiring, offering the first-class service and proven technical expertise which is reflected throughout Yanmar’s world renowned network.

He revealed he will mount two 4LV250 mhp YANMAR engines during the refit of another personal yacht, a vintage Bertram 28, that he is renovating, due to the experience he has had with Yanmar engines over the past 20 years and the service he received on the three 8LV package from Cartello.

Included in Yanmar’s full range of new generation common rail marine diesel engines, the high-end performance 8LV series is ideal for fast sports craft, ski boats and luxury cruisers, combining astonishing speed and acceleration with low noise levels and fuel economy. With a maximum engine speed of 3,800 rpm, well ahead of other engines in this sector, it also provides excellent performance at low speeds, idling at 550 rpm.

Yanmar’s ZT370 sterndrive features hydraulic shifting for responsive and smooth shifting is compatible with the YANMAR 4LV and 8LV series engines, and can be controlled with the Yanmar VC10 system or via JC10 (stern drive) and JC20 (shaft drive) joystick systems.
