Developed in partnership with the Vellmarí Foundation, the Marina Ibiza Posidonia Meadow project will see the initial planting of 1,500 Posidonia oceanica plants across the seabed—an ecosystem that has suffered substantial decline over recent decades.

Located just two kilometres from Ibiza Town, Talamanca Bay has lost nearly half of its Posidonia meadows, highlighting the urgency of intervention. Often referred to as the “lungs of the Mediterranean,” Posidonia oceanica plays a vital role in maintaining water clarity, producing oxygen and providing habitat for marine biodiversity.

The initiative goes beyond restoration alone. Marina Ibiza is actively engaging its community by inviting clients, visitors and partners to adopt individual Posidonia plants—transforming the project into a shared, long-term effort to rebuild the underwater landscape. Each adoption directly contributes to expanding the meadow and strengthening the resilience of the bay.

Scientific guidance is provided by the Vellmarí Association, led by renowned marine biologist Manu San Félix, whose expertise ensures that planting and monitoring are carried out to the highest ecological standards.

The Marina Ibiza Posidonia Meadow forms part of a wider Mediterranean conservation movement, where approximately 34% of Posidonia meadows have been lost. By combining direct investment, scientific knowledge and community participation, the project offers a scalable model for marine regeneration—demonstrating how local action can contribute to broader environmental goals.

As the first plants take root, the initiative positions Marina Ibiza not only as a leading yachting destination, but also as an active steward of the marine environment—helping to restore one of the Mediterranean’s most valuable ecosystems, one plant at a time.
