Imperia, Italy — 2–5 September 2026 will once again become a spectacular stage for classic sailing, as the Vele d’Epoca di Imperia celebrates its 40th anniversary during the 2026 Imperia Sailing Week.
For four decades, the event has brought together some of the world’s most elegant historic sailing yachts, transforming Imperia’s waterfront into a living celebration of maritime heritage, craftsmanship and classic yacht racing. The first gathering in 1986 welcomed around 30 yachts, and the event has since become a major fixture on the Mediterranean classic-yacht circuit.
A special 40th anniversary edition
The 2026 edition is particularly significant, forming part of a larger Imperia Sailing Week, running from 28 August to 6 September. The programme combines classic yacht racing with the 12 Metre GP World Championship, bringing together legendary America’s Cup-era yachts before the Vele d’Epoca fleet takes centre stage.
The 12 Metre World Championship runs from 28 August to 1 September, followed by the classic yacht regatta from 2–5 September. The 12 Metre class has a unique place in sailing history, having been used for the America’s Cup from 1958 to 1987.
Among the historic 12 Metre yachts expected in Imperia are Kookaburra II, Kookaburra III, KZ5, Kiwi Magic, France, French Kiss and South Australia, while historic yachts including Emilia, Vanity and Thea will also form part of the waterfront spectacle.
More than racing
The Vele d’Epoca experience extends well beyond the racecourse. During the four-day classic yacht programme, yachts will race during the day before returning to the harbour, where visitors can enjoy exhibitions, talks, entertainment and cultural events.
Highlights include a conversation with Italian sailing legend Mauro Pelaschier, a presentation celebrating 130 years of Cantieri Sangermani, exhibitions, family activities and the highly anticipated Parade of Elegance on 5 September. The event concludes with the prize-giving ceremony and a spectacular pyromusical show.
The programme also includes an opportunity to visit the historic training ship Palinuro, explore Imperia’s Naval Museum and step aboard the 1930 yacht Over the Rainbow.
Where history meets the Mediterranean
For sailors, collectors and classic-yacht enthusiasts, Imperia remains one of the Mediterranean’s most evocative settings. Here, historic yachts are not simply displayed as museum pieces — they return to the water, racing under sail and demonstrating the craftsmanship and design philosophies of another era.
With its 40th anniversary, the 2026 edition promises to be one of the most important celebrations yet for the classic sailing community, combining America’s Cup heritage, classic yacht racing, maritime culture and the unmistakable atmosphere of the Italian Riviera.
