Peter Burling Joins Luna Rossa for 38th America’s Cup Campaign

Renowned helmsman Peter Burling has officially joined Luna Rossa for the 38th America’s Cup, marking a major shift in the competitive sailing landscape. The announcement was made via a media statement issued by Burling’s media team on June 20.

Burling, a two-time America’s Cup winner with Emirates Team New Zealand and Olympic gold medallist, described the opportunity to join Luna Rossa as an “honour,” while reaffirming his continued commitment to other major sailing responsibilities, including his leadership of Black Foils, the New Zealand SailGP Team.

“I’m excited to announce I’ll be joining Luna Rossa for the 38th America’s Cup challenge,” said Burling. “Throughout my career, I’ve always loved racing against Luna Rossa, and now to join this iconic team is a real honour.”

The move represents a bold new chapter for Burling, who is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential sailors of his generation. His decision to join Luna Rossa signals a significant addition to the Italian syndicate’s talent pool as they prepare to challenge once again for sailing’s most prestigious trophy.

Dual Roles, Continued Commitments

Despite this major transition, Burling was quick to clarify that his new role with Luna Rossa will not affect his ongoing leadership within the SailGP circuit.

“This next chapter allows me to keep pushing my performance at the top of the sport, while continuing my leadership role with Black Foils, the New Zealand SailGP Team, and supporting the important work of Live Ocean.”

Live Ocean, the marine conservation charity co-founded by Burling and fellow sailor Blair Tuke, continues to be a central part of his professional and personal mission.

A New Adventure for the Burling Family

Beyond the professional scope, Burling shared that the move to Italy represents a special opportunity for his family.

“On a personal note, the opportunity to immerse ourselves in Italian culture is a special one for our family. Lucinda and I are excited for this adventure and to experience life in Italy with our daughter, Paloma.”

Burling’s announcement adds yet another layer of excitement and anticipation to the upcoming America’s Cup cycle. With one of sailing’s most respected figures now onboard, Luna Rossa bolsters its campaign with proven leadership, Olympic pedigree, and deep Cup experience.

As preparations ramp up for the 38th America’s Cup, all eyes will be on Burling and his new team as they chart a course toward sailing’s most coveted prize.
