In a major announcement that cements Italy’s place in the history of the America’s Cup, Luna Rossa has confirmed its participation in the 38th edition of the legendary sailing competition — this time under the burgee of a new yacht club: the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia of Naples.
This marks Luna Rossa’s seventh campaign for the Cup and the first time in history that the America’s Cup will be held in Italy, specifically in Naples in 2027.
A Strategic and Emotional Transition
After three successful campaigns with the Circolo della Vela Sicilia, including the memorable win at the 2021 PRADA Cup in Auckland and recent triumphs at the Youth and Women’s America’s Cups in Barcelona, the team has now chosen to align with CRVI, the oldest sailing club in Naples, founded in 1889.
“For the first time in 176 years of history, the America’s Cup is being held in Italy, in Naples,” said Patrizio Bertelli, President of Luna Rossa.
“It felt natural to be represented by a club with deep roots in the city and a strong international sailing reputation.”
Deep Respect Between Clubs
The transition between clubs was marked by mutual admiration and appreciation. Agostino Randazzo, President of Circolo della Vela Sicilia, reflected on 14 years of camaraderie with Luna Rossa:
“It has been a privilege to stand alongside such an extraordinary team. We’ll continue to support Luna Rossa with the same passion.”
This continuity and shared pride set a tone of unity and respect in Italy’s broader sailing community.
A New Era with Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia
Max Sirena, CEO of Luna Rossa, praised the legacy of CRVI, highlighting its role as an incubator for young sailing talent and its stewardship of the iconic Regata dei Tre Golfi.
“We are honored to have its burgee flying aboard Luna Rossa,” Sirena said. “Its cultural and sporting values are a perfect match for our vision.”
Roberto Mottola di Amato, President of CRVI, echoed this sentiment with pride:
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Representing Italy in the first America’s Cup held on our waters is a profound responsibility. We thank Luna Rossa for their trust.”
The Road to Naples 2027
While the Protocol for the 38th America’s Cup has yet to be formally signed — as the Challenger of Record, the Royal Yacht Squadron, has not confirmed its endorsement — Luna Rossa’s announcement is the clearest signal yet of a serious bid and a home-turf challenge.
With the Gulf of Naples as its battleground, Luna Rossa’s next campaign is shaping up to be its most symbolic and emotionally charged yet — sailing not just for a trophy, but for Italian heritage, innovation, and national pride.
