Peter Lester (1954–2025): Farewell to a Sailing Legend

The global sailing and America’s Cup community is mourning the passing of Peter Lester, who died peacefully at home on Friday. A three-time America’s Cup campaign veteran, world-class sailor, Olympic coach, and celebrated broadcaster, Peter’s passion, knowledge, and generosity left a lasting mark on the sport.

Born in Canterbury, New Zealand, Peter’s sailing journey began in a modest P-class dinghy in Lyttelton Harbour. His natural talent shone early, leading to major titles including OK Dinghy Junior World Champion (1974) and World Champion (1977), earning him New Zealand Yachtsman of the Year twice, a decade apart.

While his Olympic ambitions were curtailed by the 1980 Games boycott, Peter’s career flourished in Grand Prix yachting—winning the Admiral’s Cup in 1987, the One Ton Cup in 1993, and representing top international teams. He was tactician on the iconic KZ1 in the 1988 America’s Cup and a respected leader in subsequent campaigns, including the 1995 Tag Heuer Challenge.

Off the water, Peter shaped future champions as High-Performance Manager at Yachting New Zealand, guiding Olympic programmes for multiple Games. He later brought his expertise to global audiences as one of sailing’s most trusted and engaging commentators, covering America’s Cups, Olympic regattas, and world-class offshore races with insight and warmth.

Tributes have poured in from sailing legends, colleagues, and friends. Grant Dalton called him “a very good friend” whose opinion carried weight and respect. Shirley Robertson remembered him as “a standout broadcaster” with an “enviable turn of phrase.” Many recall his infectious laugh, trademark humour, and deep love for the sport.

Peter leaves behind his beloved wife Susie, three sons, and grandchildren. His legacy is one of excellence, mentorship, and an unwavering passion for sailing. The America’s Cup – and the sailing world – will not be the same without him.
