In a dramatic milestone for one of the most complex salvage operations of recent years, the 55.9-metre sailing yacht Bayesian has been lifted from the seafloor off Sicily’s northern coast. The lift was successfully completed today, Friday, 20 June, and marks a major turning point in the recovery effort following her sinking in August 2024.

Lift Operation and Recovery
Led by a team of specialist salvage contractors and supported by the 5,695 GT heavy lift vessel HEBO LIFT 10, the recovery required weeks of detailed planning and preparation. The operation included the precision detachment of Bayesian‘s 72-metre carbon mast and the installation of eight reinforced steel lifting straps under her hull, which had rested at a depth of 50 metres in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Stabilised overnight in an upright position after surfacing, the yacht is now en route to Termini Imerese. There, Bayesian’s hull will be secured onto a custom-engineered steel cradle onshore for inspection and assessment.
Environmental Safeguards in Place
To minimise ecological impact, the operation remains under tight anti-pollution protocols. Exclusion zones are actively enforced both at sea and in the air along the transport route to maintain operational safety and prevent contamination. Environmental monitoring will continue throughout the remainder of the operation.
What Happens Next
The successful raising of Bayesian opens the next phase in the investigation into the cause of her sinking—an incident that stunned the superyacht community and resulted in tragic loss. Authorities continue to examine all aspects of the event, with ongoing updates expected in the coming weeks.
Live coverage of the recovery is being streamed via The Yacht Report‘s YouTube channel, providing real-time visuals and expert commentary.
