Rolex Giraglia 2021 Notice of Race published

The Italian Yacht Club, organizer of the 68th edition of the Rolex Giraglia, has published the Notice of Race and officially opened registrations for the offshore classic, this year with the departure from Sanremo.

The Rolex Giraglia will therefore see its departure on Wednesday 16 June from Sanremo on a course of 241 miles. This includes a buoy in French waters near Cannes, before heading to the Giraglia islet and returning to Genoa at the Italian Yacht Club, where the awards ceremony is scheduled for Saturday 19 June.

The Italian Yacht Club and its partners believe that the extraordinary program, with departure and arrival in Italy, designed as a consequence of the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, will thus honor the tradition of the Rolex Giraglia, strengthening the friendly relationship between Italy and France, and facilitating the participation of crews from Italy and abroad. Precisely in this perspective and to underline the link with the French town, the Société Nautique of Saint Tropez, will start the regatta connecting with Sanremo and will take the steps at the buoy of the new Rolex Giraglia course, located off the Rade d ‘ Agay, about 15 miles from Saint Tropez.

For 2021, the program includes two night regattas to approach Sanremo. Two stages of about 60 miles, one departing from Genoa and one from Saint Tropez to give the Italian and foreign crews the opportunity to reach the starting port of the long race in the race.

The Rolex Giraglia returns in 2021 with the departure from Sanremo with which it has a very long-standing relationship; in fact, the first edition of the regatta also started from Sanremo on Saturday 12 July 1953. And always in the context of tradition – before taking on the ‘modern’ format with the week of Saint-Tropez from 1998 – the regatta saw the alternation of ports of arrival and departure. Since 1953 the Giraglia has departed from Cannes (1), from Le Lavandou (5), from Toulon (14), from Sanremo (22), from St. Tropez (25) and arrived in Monaco (2), in Le Lavandou (2), in St. Tropez (3), in Toulon (16), in Genoa (18), in Sanremo (26).

The news
From 2021, in addition to the return of the X2s, to their sixth participation, this year the large MULTI 70 trimarans are admitted with Giovanni Soldini’s Maserati, returning from a record season between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, in the front row to defend the honors of home.
the Rolex Giraglia also becomes Classic, with a special ranking for boats built before 1985 participating in the offshore test. The first boat classified Overall, in the most numerous Class between IRC and ORC / ORC Club (of the Classics only) will be awarded the YCI Heritage Challenge Trophy. The first boat classified in real time will be awarded the Classic Trophy.
