MAIB Report Confirms Fatal Crew Incident on 62m Baton Rouge

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has published its findings on the death of Roy Temme, the 47-year-old chief engineer aboard the 62.5-metre yacht Baton Rouge. Temme was electrocuted on 23 February 2024 while attempting to repair an air damper following a power outage. Despite immediate medical intervention, he could not be revived.

The investigation revealed multiple safety lapses, including insufficient safeguards against electrical shocks, inadequate procedures for enclosed spaces, and the absence of a required permit to identify associated hazards.

Following the incident, Burgess, the yacht’s operating company, implemented new safety measures, revising permit-to-work guidelines and enclosed space definitions across its fleet.

A friend of the late engineer, Liam Dobbin, shared: “He is a man with a heart of gold and is sorely missed by many family, friends, and crew who have met and worked with him. He leaves a wife and two children.”

No additional recommendations were issued by MAIB, as the operator had already addressed key safety concerns.
