Ferrari Hypersail: A Flying 100-Foot Monohull That Redefines Offshore Racing

In a bold fusion of endurance racing heritage and cutting-edge nautical engineering, Ferrari has officially unveiled its Hypersail project—a revolutionary 100-foot, fully foiling offshore racing monohull designed to fly across oceans with zero emissions and zero compromise.

The initiative marks Ferrari’s first-ever foray into sailing, and not just any sailing—but a class-leading, high-tech, endurance-driven challenge designed to rewrite the playbook of ocean racing.

The Ultimate Expression of Performance at Sea

Led by renowned Italian sailor Giovanni Soldini as Team Principal, the Hypersail project is not just about speed—it’s about building a new platform for R&D, innovation, and energy autonomy in the harshest maritime environments.

“Hypersail is a new challenge that pushes us to go beyond our boundaries and expand our technological horizons,” said Ferrari Chairman John Elkann. “Designing a yacht for offshore racing is perhaps the ultimate expression of endurance.”

The name Hypersail is a nod to Ferrari’s legendary Hypercars, such as the Le Mans-winning 499P—vehicles that embody the Prancing Horse’s ultimate performance philosophy. This project brings that same spirit to the ocean.

Design by Guillaume Verdier, Innovation by Ferrari

The vessel’s naval architecture is helmed by none other than Guillaume Verdier, the creative force behind some of the most innovative racing yachts in the world. His concept for Hypersail centers on stabilizing flight via three contact points: a canting keel (which doubles as one of the foils), a rudder foil, and alternating lateral foils.

From a technological standpoint, Hypersail is breaking new ground:

  • A full foiling monohull, engineered to maintain flight across oceanic distances
  • The first 100-foot yacht to be completely energy self-sufficient, relying solely on solar, wind, and kinetic energy
  • A design supported by Ferrari’s control systems and aerodynamic modeling, derived from its experience in Formula 1 and Hypercar development

The yacht is currently under construction in Italy, with a launch scheduled for 2026, followed by a rigorous phase of sea trials.

🔬 Open Innovation and Technological Transfer

One of the most groundbreaking aspects of Hypersail is its philosophy of open innovation—a collaborative approach that combines Ferrari’s advanced simulation, material science, and control systems with nautical experts, external partners, and component specialists.

Nine patents have already been filed, with six more in progress—spanning everything from foil motion control to energy harvesting and management systems. Importantly, the lessons learned from Hypersail are expected to feed back into Ferrari’s future road and race cars.

“The meeting of different cultures and advanced technologies is enabling us to build a yacht that is revolutionary in many respects,” said Giovanni Soldini. “Ferrari’s contribution is driving the development of on-board control technology that has never been seen before.”

100% Energy Autonomy

Hypersail sets a new benchmark for sustainability in offshore racing. No combustion engines. No fossil fuel backup. All systems—including the hydraulics for foils, the canting keel, rudder control, and all onboard computing—must be powered by renewable sources gathered while underway.

The engineering challenge? Maintaining top performance while navigating unpredictable weather, violent sea states, and long-distance, non-stop races—all without external support.

Every component of the yacht, from foil actuators to sensor systems, has been optimized for efficiency, making the Hypersail perhaps the most sophisticated expression of energy autonomy ever conceived in yachting.

A New Era of Endurance Has Begun

The Ferrari Hypersail is not just a sailing yacht. It’s an engineering manifesto, a tribute to the art of endurance, and a beacon for innovation that reaches far beyond the nautical world. As the boundaries between automotive, aerospace, and marine technology continue to blur, Hypersail represents a stunning new frontier—where the sea becomes Ferrari’s next racetrack.
