Léon wins the centenary edition of the Rolex Fastnet Race

In a historic triumph, Léon, the JPK 1050 skippered by Alexis Loison and Jean-Pierre Kelbert, has claimed overall victory in the 2025 Rolex Fastnet Race—an edition marking 100 years since the first race. Out of a record-breaking fleet of 444 yachts, Léon emerged victorious on corrected time under IRC, the system that levels the playing field across yacht designs.

This win is particularly meaningful, not only because it comes in the centenary year, but also because it marks the first time a French team has won overall since the race began finishing in Cherbourg. For Loison, a native of Cherbourg and a seasoned Figaro sailor, the victory on home waters is especially sweet. “It’s really the same feeling as 12 years ago,” he said, referencing his first Fastnet win in 2013. “An unexpected victory, but with just as much joy.”

The 695-nautical-mile offshore challenge saw Loison and Kelbert prevail in IRC Two before securing the Fastnet Challenge Cup. Their performance—particularly impressive given the light-air conditions—showcased the power and efficiency of the JPK 1050. Kelbert, the yacht’s builder, noted its superior reaching abilities: “It’s like a rocket.”

This year’s podium was dominated by French doublehanded crews, with Lann Ael 3 and Amarris taking second and third. All three top teams had one thing in common: deep roots in the Figaro racing school, long regarded as a training ground for elite offshore talent.

As the Rolex Fastnet Race continues its evolution, blending tradition and innovation, Léon’s win stands as a testament to determination, experience, and Franco excellence in offshore sailing. Loison, just 40, says he’ll be back in 2027. The story isn’t over—it’s only gaining speed.
