The Ocean Race Europe Leg 1 Crash Jury Decision

An International Jury has ruled that Team Holcim-PRB is entitled to redress following their forced retirement from Leg 1 of The Ocean Race Europe. The decision comes after a dramatic collision with Allagrande Mapei Racing during the opening moments of the race in Kiel, Germany, two weeks ago.

Both IMOCA teams were unable to continue after the incident, which occurred shortly after the start. While no additional penalties were imposed, the jury determined that Holcim-PRB was unfairly disadvantaged by the contact and would be awarded points for Leg 1. Their finishing position for that stage will now be calculated as the average of their results across Legs 2 to 5.

The ruling ensures that Holcim-PRB’s campaign remains competitive despite the setback. It also highlights the increasing pressure and risks seen in IMOCA fleet starts, particularly in tight venues like Kiel.

The decision has sparked wider discussions about the format of The Ocean Race Europe, with some questioning whether Sprint Gates and short, intense starts are suitable for IMOCA yachts, traditionally designed for oceanic passages rather than confined sprints.

The debate underscores the growing tension between the sport’s competitive integrity and the need for spectator-friendly, entertainment-driven formats. Fans and industry professionals alike are now asking: Is the IMOCA class the right fit for such short, high-intensity legs?

We’d love to hear your thoughts – are these high-drama, close-quarter starts good for the sport, or should race organizers adapt the format to better suit the boats?
