SailGP Exclusion: Auckland’s Tātaki Auckland Unlimited Announces Cancellation for March 2024

Tātaki Auckland Unlimited chief executive Nick Hill said it had worked with SailGP to explore “all possible options to stage the event here” alongside the Auckland Council group, including on-water and on-land seating plans.

“However, the unavailability of Wynyard Point land as a spectator facility proved to be a barrier to holding the event in Auckland.”

He said the land was part of SailGP’s original vision for the sailing competition.

On SailGP’s website the event is still being advertised as “the most exciting race on water is coming to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland!”

Hill said Auckland remains a world-class destination for major events.

“We pride ourselves on our international reputation for hosting global events, as was showcased recently with the FIFA Women’s World Cup,” he said.

New Zealand’s SailGP team said in a statement they’re continuing to work with their partners, including the relevant local and central government agencies to progress planning for its Season 4 New Zealand event 23-24 March 2024.

“We will share more information as soon as it is available.”

Tātaki Auckland Unlimited are now shifting attention to other events and upcoming activities hosted on Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour and waterfront like the inaugural Moana Auckland festival.

“Including the Millennium Cup superyacht regatta, Wooden Boat Festival, the popular Auckland Boat Show and the new World Manu Champs alongside some amazing entertainment for the whole family,” said Hill.

The ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix Auckland is part of a multi-year partnership which sees Auckland and Christchurch alternate as hosts for four consecutive seasons.

Lyttelton hosted SailGP in New Zealand for the first time in March.
