Balearic Nautical Market Continues to Decline as Spring Approaches

Balearic Islands Lead National Boat Registrations but Face a 27.5% Year-on-Year Drop

The Balearic Islands continue to lead the national market in recreational boat registrations in 2025. However, the region has experienced a significant 27.5% decline compared to the same period last year, a sharper drop than the 13% decrease recorded nationwide, according to data from ANEN .

This downward trend is also evident in the charter market, which accounts for 26.4% of total boat registrations but has suffered a 27.3% contraction across Spain.

Despite this slowdown, the Balearic Islands remain at the forefront of the Spanish nautical market, holding 13.9% of all national registrations. The region is followed by Barcelona (12.4%) and Alicante (10.1%).

A Decline in Registrations Across the Board

The Balearic Islands, historically a key driver of Spain’s nautical sector, recorded 66 recreational boat registrations by February 2025, according to the latest monthly report from ANEN, based on data from the General Directorate of Merchant Marine.

This marks a 27.5% decrease compared to the same period in 2024, when 91 boats were registered. The decline follows a 20.7% year-on-year drop recorded in January, further reinforcing concerns about a slowdown in the sector.

On a national scale, the nautical market began 2025 with a 13% drop in registrations, totaling 474 units compared to 545 in the same period last year.

Charter Market Hit Hard by the Downturn

The charter sector, which plays a crucial role in the industry, has also been significantly affected. Representing 26.4% of total registrations, charter boat registrations have seen a 27.3% decline nationwide, with only 125 boats registered by February, compared to 172 in 2024.

This contraction raises concerns, as charter activity is a key economic driver for Spain’s nautical tourism sector, particularly in high-demand regions such as the Balearic Islands, Barcelona, and Alicante.

Looking Ahead: A Hopeful Recovery

Despite the challenging start to 2025, industry professionals remain optimistic about a potential rebound as the peak summer season approaches.

The upcoming months will be crucial in determining whether the Balearic Islands and Spain’s broader nautical industry can recover from this early-year setback and regain momentum.

Will the upcoming season bring a turnaround for the sector? All eyes are on the coming months as the industry navigates through these turbulent waters.
